A mountainous region that occupies most of the UK and Wales. It is mainly composed of Lower Palaeozoic strata, and was folded during the Caledonian orogeny, but later erosion has resulted in an uplifted peneplain, with the highest peaks being Mount Snowdon (1,085m) in the northwest and Mount Carnellwellyn (1,062m) standing as relict hills. It produces high-quality coal and iron, and is rich in hydraulic resources, so it played an important role in the development of industry and supplying hydraulic power to the UK. The mountains are close to the sea, there is little plain, and the soil is poor, making it unsuitable for cultivation, so livestock farming and dairy farming are practiced. It is important in the study of Palaeozoic rocks, and the Cambrian, Ordovician, and Silurian periods are all derived from the old local and inhabitant names of this mountain region.
