…The family originated in the 11th century with Umberto I the White, a feudal lord in Burgundy, France. Later, through conquest and marriage policies, the family acquired a vast territory stretching from southeastern France to northwestern Italy (Savoy, the Aosta Valley, and Piedmont), forming the Duchy of Savoy in the 15th century, and establishing an absolute monarchy under Emanuele Filiberto in the mid-16th century.
