Gunflint biota

Japanese: ガンフリント生物群 - がんふりんとせいぶつぐん（英語表記）Gunflint biota

This is a group of microfossils found in large quantities in the Gunflint chert distributed on the shores of Lake Superior in Ontario, Canada, and is believed to be fossils from about 1.9 billion years ago. In 1954, ES Berghorn and SA Tyler reported these microfossils from Schreiber on the north shore of Lake Superior, which led to the discovery of fossils in Precambrian strata around the world, significantly increasing our knowledge of the biota of this period. This chert containing microfossils is the lowest part of the Gunflint iron ore formation, and is distributed in Ontario from Schreiber in the east to Gunflint Lake in the west, with a thickness of 8 to 23 cm, over a distance of 180 km.

カナダのオンタリオ州スペリオル湖岸に分布するガンフリントチャートから多量に産出する微化石群で，約19億年前の化石とされている。1954年，E.S.バーグホーンとS.A.タイラーがスペリオル湖北岸のシュライバーからこの微化石を報告したのが端緒となって，世界各地の先カンブリア時代の地層から化石が発見されるようになり，この時代の生物相に関する知識は著しく増大した。微化石を含むこのチャートはガンフリント鉄鉱層の最下部にあたり，オンタリオ州で東のシュライバーから西のガンフリント湖まで，8～23cmの厚さで180kmにもわたって分布している。
