Rowan - Rowan

Japanese: ナナカマド - ななかまど
Rowan - Rowan

A deciduous tall tree of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It grows to a height of 7-10 meters. The branches have lenticels. The leaves are alternate and pinnately compound. The leaflets are 3-7 cm long, sessile, and number 9-15, oblong or lanceolate, with pointed tips and sharp duplicato-serrated edges. From May to July, compound corymbs of about 10 cm long appear at the ends of the branches, and many white five-petaled flowers bloom. There are 20 stamens, one pistil, 3-4 styles, and an inferior ovary. The five sepals are inwardly curved. The fruit is a globular pear-shaped fruit about 5 mm in diameter. It grows in cool mountainous areas, and is distributed throughout Japan, the Korean peninsula, the Kuril Islands, and Sakhalin. It is said that the name comes from the fact that it is so resistant to burning that it remains unburned even if it is put into the stove seven times. It is known for its beautiful autumn leaves and ripe red fruits. In Hokkaido , it is planted in tree-lined avenues. It is small, about 2 meters tall, with large stipules that are semicircular and leafy, 1 to 2 centimeters wide. It is distributed from Honshu west of the Kanto region to Kyushu.

The Rowan genus has about 100 species distributed mainly in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
