...When the central attachment of the ovary is separated, as in pears and pumpkins, it is called the lateral placental type (e in the figure), and when the septum disappears, as in violets and papayas, the ovary becomes completely one chamber, and the ovules appear to be attached to the side wall. When the ovules are united and attached to the bottom of the ovary chamber, they are called basal placental type (polygonum, walnut, rice), and when they are attached to the top, they are called apical placental type (olive, elderberry). In many flowers, the calyx, corolla, stamens, and pistils are in the same position, and therefore the ovary is located above these attachment points (receptacle), so it is called the superior ovary (a in Figure 3). ...
