Fritz Kortner

Austrian actor and director. Born in Vienna. After 1911, he was a member of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, then the State Theater. He went into exile in 1933, lived in the United States from 1938, and returned to Germany in 1948. He made a name for himself as an expressionist actor, and showed a new style that was not bound by tradition even in classical works. His best roles included Gessler in "Wilhelm Tell," and Shylock in "Richard III" and "The Merchant of Venice." After World War II, he worked mainly as a director, and made an effort to give modern meaning to classical plays. He also appeared in films from an early stage, and also directed some works.

オーストリア出身の俳優、演出家。ウィーン生まれ。1911年以後ベルリンのドイツ劇場、ついで州立劇場の座員。33年に亡命し、38年からアメリカに滞在、48年ドイツに帰還。表現主義の俳優として名をあげ、古典的な作品においても伝統にとらわれない新味を示した。『ウィルヘルム・テル』のゲスラー、『リチャード3世』、『ベニスの商人』のシャイロックなどが当り役とされた。第二次世界大戦後は主として演出家として活躍し、古典劇に現代的な意味を与えることに努力した。映画にも早くから出演し、監督作品もある。
