…The origin of this shrine was when Emperor Goshirakawa, who had a deep faith in Kumano Gongen in Kishu, enshrined the Kumano Sansho Gongen near his Imperial Palace Hojujidono in the eastern part of Kyoto in 1160 (Eireki 1), and named it Shin-Kumano. The Miidera monk Kakusan, who often served as the guide for Kumano Imperial pilgrimages, inherited the position of Kumano Sanzan Kengyo, which had been selected for generations since the temple's founder Zoyo, and also became the Kengyo of this shrine, which led to remarkable prosperity.
