[Two myths about opening up the country]
The founding myth of Korea is a good example of the period when Korean culture reached its full potential, when cultural elements were fused with "grand" culture and local culture. Korea has two founding myths, the Tangun myth and the Gija myth, which were established during the Goryeo period, the former based on folk beliefs and the latter on Confucianism. The Tangun myth is about Tangun, born to the son of a heavenly god and an incarnation of a bear, who founded the country in Pyongyang Castle in the 50th year of the reign of Emperor Yao of China (2333 BC is the beginning of the Tangun era), but 1,500 years later, Gija was appointed as a fief to Korea and became a mountain god.
