Uneme Festival

...The Tale of Yamato records that Uneme, lamenting the decline of Emperor Heizei's favor, threw herself into the pond, and this is also the subject of the Noh play Uneme. In the southeast of the pond is the Kinukakeyanagi tree, where Uneme is said to have hung her kimono before drowning, and in the northwest is the Uneme shrine. Every year, on the night of the harvest moon, the Uneme festival is held with floating fan flowers in the pond. The shallow pond has been described since ancient times as "neither clear nor muddy, neither in nor out, seven parts fish and three parts water," but sometimes the water changes color to red. ...
