1841‐86 Austrian astronomer. Born in Prague, he studied astronomy and medicine in Vienna, earning his medical degree in 1865, after which he devoted himself to astronomy research. He began teaching astronomy at the University of Vienna in 1866, and became a professor in 1875. He wrote numerous papers on the determination and refinement of the orbits of comets and asteroids, and his book, Method of Determining the Orbits of Comets and Planets (1882, revised and expanded edition), in two volumes, was a compilation of the knowledge in this field at the time. However, it was his work, The Book of Food Treasures (1887), that made Oppolzer's name the most famous. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
