...It was the trailhead for Mount Kano, which was a place of worship for Edo citizens, and was also the setting for the famous kabuki play Yowasake Ukina no Yokogushi, which features the character Kirare Yoza. In 1871 (Meiji 4), the prefectural office of Kisarazu Prefecture, which governed Awa and Kazusa, was remodeled from the former residence of the lord of Sakurai Domain, and continued to exist until 1873, when Kisarazu Prefecture became Chiba Prefecture. In 1936, the Naval Air Corps and Naval Air Arsenal were established, and the Self-Defense Forces are still based here today.

In 1873, Kisarazu prefecture and Inba prefecture merged to become Chiba prefecture, and in 1875, when Niihari prefecture was abolished, the three districts south of the Tone River were incorporated, and furthermore, the former Inba prefecture north of the Tone River was transferred to Ibaraki prefecture, and part of Katsushika district was transferred to Saitama prefecture, and the current prefectural boundaries were basically finalized. …
