Salon de la Société des artistes indépendants

...The 1863 Salon was so strict that 3,000 of the 5,000 submitted works were rejected (4,000 had been accepted in the previous Salon), and so Napoleon III advised the holding of the Salon des refusés (in which Manet, Pissarro, Fantin-Latour and others exhibited), which resulted in increased criticism of the Salon. In 1874, the younger generation who had not been accepted into the Salon organized an Impressionist exhibition, and a series of independent factions were formed, including the Société des artistes français in 1881 and the Salon de la Société des artistes indépendants in 1884. Since the 20th century, the Salon has survived as merely one of the exhibitions lacking in individuality. ...

In 1863, the Salon des refusés was held for those who had been rejected from the Salon. In 1884, the Salon de la Société des artistes independents was organized in opposition to the public salon, and other exhibitions were organized to promote different aesthetic themes, such as the Salon d'Automne (1903) and the Salon des Tuilerie (1923). In England, the Society of Artists of Great Britain, a London-based association of artists, held the first exhibition in 1760, and this was taken over by the Royal Academy, which has held exhibitions annually since 1769.
