…Cross-legged sitting and one-kneeling sitting are depicted in many medieval picture scrolls, and it can be said that they were rather common at the time. Other styles include kikiyo, wariza, rakuza, ketsufuza, half-lotus, sonkiyo, and kiza. There are two types of kneeling: one in which the knees and toes are on the floor and the buttocks are on the heels, and one in which the upper body from the knees is vertical. Walking in the latter position is called 'kizagyo', and was the manner in which a person of lower status would appear or retreat in front of a person of higher status. …
