L'Ami du Peuple (English)

…After returning to France in 1777, Marat published treatises on natural science and works arguing for the reform of the penal system while working as a physician to the Count of Artois in Paris. When the French Revolution began, he began publishing a newspaper called L'Ami du Peuple (Friend of the People) in the autumn of 1789, attacking the court and the government. He was an early proponent of republicanism, and his sharp arguments earned him the nickname "Friend of the People." He played an important role in the uprising of August 10, 1792, and became a member of the National Assembly in September of the same year. As one of the leaders of the Mountain faction, he advocated the thoroughness of the revolution with the support of the people, attacked the Girondists, and expelled them from the Assembly, and attempted to implement a reign of terror against the counter-revolutionaries and Girondists. …
