The Meistersingers of Nuremberg - The Meistersingers of Nuremberg

The Meistersingers of Nuremberg - The Meistersingers of Nuremberg

Wagner's music drama in three acts. Completed in 1867. The lyrics and music are based on the art of singing by citizens (qualified singers were called Meistersingers), which flourished in Germany from the 15th to 16th centuries, and it is the only one of Wagner's major works that contains a comedic element. The plot is about shoemaker's master Hans Sachs, a real-life Meistersinger, helping the young knight Walter von Stolzing win a singing contest and win his lover Eva. The play is woven with conflicts between old and new art forms and various human dramas, including the passion of the two young people, the failure of the master clerk Beckmesser, who clings to traditional rules, Sachs' tolerance in recognizing the potential of new art in Walter's singing and his resignation to Eva, and his praise of folk art. The music is filled with a festive atmosphere, as represented by the famous "Prelude," but on the other hand, it also succeeds in delicate psychological depictions, such as in "Sachs's Monologue" (Act 2), and the density of its expression makes it one of the best in all of Wagner's works. Furthermore, since this work's content glorifies German art, it has been used as a symbol of nationalism seeking German unification since its premiere in Munich in 1868, and at one time was used by the Nazis as a tool to boost national prestige and morale. The Japanese premiere (abridged version) was in 1960 (Showa 35). The complete work premiered in 1981 by the Nikikai Association.
