Born: November 15, 1890, Gothenburg
[Died] October 20, 1978, Lund Swedish theologian. Professor of systematic theology and ethics at Lund University from 1924 to 1958. Together with G. Aulen, he perfected a new method of theological research known as the "motif method," and formed the Lund School. His main work, Den Kristna Kaerlekstanken genom fiderna, Eros och agape (I.1930, II.36), is a representative document of the Lund School, and clearly explains that Christ's love is agape, as distinguished from eros, and that this was shown in its pure form in early Christianity and in Luther's Reformation. He was the first president of the Lutheran World Federation from 1947 to 1952, and was also one of the leaders of the world church movement.
