Literature in the Soviet Union since 1917 is generally referred to as Soviet literature. However, the majority of literature is Russian literature, which has a 1,000-year history, and therefore post-revolutionary Russian literature is sometimes called Soviet literature to distinguish it from pre-revolutionary Russian literature. One example is the term "Russian/Soviet literature," which is commonly used in Japan. In the former Soviet Union, post-revolutionary Russian literature was called Russkaya sovetskaya literatura (meaning Soviet Russian literature in English), and was used to distinguish it from the broader term "Soviet literature." 1917年以降のソ連邦内の文学を総称して通例ソビエト文学と呼ぶ。 旧ソ連邦では,革命後のロシア文学はRusskaya sovetskaya literatura(英語ではSoviet Russian Literature.〈ソビエト・ロシアの文学〉の意)と呼ばれ,広義のSovetskaya literatura(ソビエト文学)と区別されて用いられていた。
