…The word kokugaku originally meant schools established in various provinces under the Ritsuryo system, but it was only in the late modern period that it began to be used in the above-mentioned sense. Norinaga Motoori's Uiyamabumi also had a negative view of the term, saying, "The study of the affairs of the Imperial nation may be called wagaku or kokugaku, but such a name is ridiculous." However, Hirotari Nakajima's Kashizono Zuihitsu (1854) contains the phrase, "Now I say that kokugaku is a new school established by Motoori, ashamed that there is no way in our country," suggesting that the meaning of kokugaku was closely related to the ideologicalization of its contents. This name was finally established in the Meiji period. …

…〈国学〉とは本来,律令制度のもとで諸国に置かれた学校を意味する言葉であったが,上記の字義で用いられるようになったのは近世後期のことである。本居宣長の《初山踏(ういやまぶみ)》も,〈皇国の事の学をば,和学或は国学などいふならひなれども,そはいたくわろきいひざま也〉と,この呼称には否定的であったが,中島広足(なかじまひろたり)の《橿園随筆(かしぞのずいひつ)》(1854)には,〈今云国学は,我国に道なきを恥て,本居の新に建立(たて)たる学〉といった語句が見え,〈国学〉の語義がその内容のイデオロギー化と大きな関係があったことをうかがわせる。この名称が最終的に定着したのは明治時代になってからであった。…
