Climate change - climatic variation

It is often used in the same sense as climate change, but it is actually a term that corresponds to climate variability, which refers to the variability (range of fluctuation) of the climate, which varies from year to year to several decades. As normal values ​​for temperature and other factors are generally expressed as average values ​​over a 30-year period, some say that climate change refers to cases where there is a significant change in the average value over about 30 years. However, even if there is no change in the average value, if there is a significant change in the magnitude of the fluctuation itself (variability), as represented by the standard deviation, it should be considered that climate change has occurred. For example, a tendency for abnormal weather to occur frequently can be seen as one manifestation of climate change.

気候変化とほぼ同じ意味で使われることが多いが、本来は年々～数十年で変動する気候の変動性（変動幅）を意味するclimate variabilityに対応する用語でもある。気温などの平年値は一般に30年間の平均値で表されるから、気候変動とは30年程度の平均値に有意な変化が生じた場合をさすという考え方もある。しかし、平均値に変化がなくても、標準偏差で代表されるような変動そのものの大きさ（変動性）に著しい変化が生じた場合には、気候変動がおこったと考えるべきである。たとえば、異常気象の多発傾向などは気候変動の一つの現れとみることができる。
