Among the primitive fishes belonging to the Paleozoic era, the jawless fishes, there were two groups: those with a pair of external nostrils, or nasal openings that opened to the outside world (Dinars) and those with only one, located in the median area (Monorrhinae). The best-known of the latter, the Cephalostra, had a pineal foramen between the eyes and a single external nares a little forward of it on the dorsal surface of the hard, bony armor covering the cephalothorax.
