Northern Kuril Islands

...Foxes can be found throughout the archipelago, but brown bears, squirrels, and rabbits, which live in Hokkaido, are more prevalent in the south and less prevalent in the north. Before World War II, the archipelago was geographically divided into three regions: the Southern Kuril Islands, the Central Kuril Islands, and the Northern Kuril Islands. The Southern Kuril Islands and the Central Kuril Islands were bordered by the Etorofu Strait, and the Central Kuril Islands and the Northern Kuril Islands were bordered by the Onekotan Strait.
