Gion Rokucho - Gion Uchi Rokucho

...The townscape first began on the north and south sides of Gion-cho facing Shijo-dori, and full-scale development began in the Kanbun period. In other words, around 1670 (Kanbun 10), the townscape moved south from Sanjo along Yamato-oji, forming the Gion Soto-roku-cho area between the area and Donguri-no-zushi, south of Shijo-dori. In 1713 (Shotoku 3), the town was developed along the Shirakawa River, and the Gion Uchi-roku-cho area appeared. All the playhouses that had been on Shijo-gawara were moved to Nakano-cho, one of the Soto-roku-cho areas, and by the Genroku period, five playhouses were lined up on either side of Shijo-dori. ...

…町並はまず四条通に面した祇園町北側，同南側などに始まり，寛文期に入って本格的な開発が行われるようになった。すなわち，1670年(寛文10)ごろには大和大路沿いに三条方面から町並が南下，四条通南の団栗（どんぐり）の辻子（ずし）までの間に〈祇園外六町（そとろくちよう）〉が形成され，1713年(正徳3)には白川沿いに町地が造成されて〈祇園内六町〉が出現した。四条河原にあった芝居小屋もすべて外六町のうちの〈中之町（なかのちよう）〉に移り，元禄期には四条通をはさんで5棟の芝居小屋が立ち並んだ。…
