In the mid-1960s, mothers who felt a sense of crisis about the influence of mass media such as television and comics on children's lives cooperated with local young people to start a membership-based movement to encourage children to appreciate good theater and music. The movement, which began in Fukuoka, spread rapidly, and in 1974 a national organization called the National Association of Children's Theaters and Parents' Theaters was launched.
