[1] (Noun) ① In China, this term refers to the uncivilized foreign tribes living in the East. The Han people who lived in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River were called "Chinese," while this term referred to the peoples of northeastern China, Korea, Japan, etc. ※Shinno Shōtōki (1339-43), Vol. 1 "Japan should be one of the nine barbarians. [1] 〘名〙 (東方のえびすの意)① 中国で、東方に住む未開の異民族をさしていったことば。黄河の中・下流地域に住む漢民族を「中華」と呼ぶのに対して、中国東北部・朝鮮・日本などの民族をさした。※神皇正統記(1339‐43)上「日本は九夷の其一なるべし。異国には此国をば東夷とす」 〔書経‐周官〕② (日本の東部に住んでいるところから) 蝦夷(えみし)の異称。あずまえびす。※沙汰未練書(14C初)「東夷成敗事。於関東其沙汰〈東夷者蝦子(えぞ)事也〉」③ 東国地方の武士。関東地方のあらあらしい武者。京都の人があざけりの気持をこめて用いたことば。あずまえびす。あらえびす。※高野本平家(13C前)一一「国母官女は東夷(とうイ)西戎の手にしたがひ、臣下卿相は数万の軍旅にとらはれて、旧里にかへり給ひしに」[2] (江戸の東南隅にあったところから) 江戸深川の遊里。吉原の北狄、新宿の西戎、品川の南蛮に対する称。※雑俳・川傍柳(1780‐83)二「東夷南蛮西戎は岡場所」
