Genji firefly (English name) Luciola cruciata

Japanese: ゲンジボタル（英語表記）Luciola cruciata

Coleoptera, Lampyridae. With a body length of 12-18 mm, it is larger than the Heike firefly. The body is black, the prothorax is pale red, and there is a black stripe that spreads down the middle along the midline. The terminal two abdominal segments in males and one abdominal segment in females each have yellowish-white light-emitting organs. When viewed from the back, the head is almost hidden under the prothorax. The compound eyes are large and the antennae are thread-like. The forewings are almost parallel to each other, and each wing has four weak vertical ridges. The larvae live in clear streams, prey on Japanese river snails, and come on land to pupate in April-May. They are distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.
