A brown soil (loam) originating from Quaternary volcanic ash distributed widely in the Kanto region, it constitutes the Kanto Loam Layer (red soil layer). In southern Kanto, this volcanic ash was mainly supplied from the Hakone and Fuji volcanoes, and was divided into the Tama, Shimosueyoshi, Musashino, and Tachikawa Loam Layers, from oldest to newest. The Tama Loam Layer was subsequently further subdivided into several layers. The older the topographical surface, the thicker the loam layer. For example, the Shimosueyoshi surface is covered by all the loam layers below the Shimosueyoshi Loam Layer, the Tachikawa surface is covered by only the Tachikawa Loam Layer, and there is no loam layer on the alluvial surface that makes up Tokyo's downtown area. The loam layers are often sandwiched between several successive pumice layers and contain Paleolithic artifacts. → Related topics Kanto Plain | Saitama [Prefecture] | Sagamihara | Shimousa Plateau | Wind-spun layer | Mount Fuji | Musashino Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
