Norwegian oceanographer and meteorologist. Graduated from the University of Oslo. From 1918 to 1925, he participated in the Arctic expedition aboard the Maud, and proposed a new theory on ocean circulation. From 1926 to 1940, he was a professor at the Bergen Geophysical Institute and Christian Mikkelsen Research Institute. In 1936, he became director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in the United States, and made a great contribution to research on ocean current theory, problems at the boundary between the atmosphere and the ocean, wind waves and swells, underwater sound waves, and more. He returned to Japan in 1948. Major works include "The Ocean."
