Norwegian oceanographer and meteorologist. Graduated from the University of Oslo. From 1918 to 1925, he participated in the Arctic expedition aboard the Maud, and proposed a new theory on ocean circulation. From 1926 to 1940, he was a professor at the Bergen Geophysical Institute and Christian Mikkelsen Research Institute. In 1936, he became director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in the United States, and made a great contribution to research on ocean current theory, problems at the boundary between the atmosphere and the ocean, wind waves and swells, underwater sound waves, and more.
