A physician from the early Nara period. Dates of birth and death unknown. Originally from Baekje, he was originally a monk and called Keishun, but in 700 (Bunbu 4) he was forced to return to secular life in order to use his art and was given the surname Yoshitaka. In 721 (Yoro 5) he was rewarded for his medical skills, and in 724 (Jinki 1) he was given the surname Yoshida no Muraji. In 730 (Tenpyo 2) he appointed a disciple to teach him medical skills in his old age, and later served as head librarian and head bureau of medicines. 奈良時代前期の医術家。生没年不詳。百済国出自で初め僧であり恵俊と称したが,700年(文武4)その芸を用いるため還俗させられ吉冝の姓名を賜った。721年(養老5)医術により賞を受け,724年(神亀1)には吉田連と賜姓された。730年(天平2)には老年につき医術を伝えるための弟子が置かれ,のち図書頭,典薬頭などを歴任した。他方で儒教・道教にも長じたほか,《懐風藻》《万葉集》にも詩歌を残している。【佐藤 信】
