Poppy - Papaver somniferum
1. A biennial plant of the Papaveraceae family. It grows to a height of about 1.5 meters. The leaves are whitish with jagged edges and wrap around the stem at the base. In early summer, the downward-facing buds turn upward and produce large, red, purple, white or striped, four-petaled flowers. The seeds are small and black and are used in cooking. The immature fruit of the white flowers produces opium Opium The raw material is the poppy, but in Japan, cultivation is strictly restricted.
