A medical scientist, he was born in Fukushima Prefecture. His maiden name was Abe. He was adopted by Ohara Hajime, the director of Ohara Hospital in Fukushima City (now Ohara General Hospital). In 1910 (Meiji 43), he graduated from the School of Medicine at Kyoto Imperial University. He joined the Department of Surgery at Tohoku Imperial University, and after serving as a lecturer and assistant professor, he became the vice director and then director of Ohara Hospital. In 1925 (Taisho 14), he was the first in Japan to report tularemia, and discovered the causative bacterium Pasteurella tularensis . This disease originally affects hares, mice, squirrels, etc., but humans can also become infected. In 1930 (Showa 5), he published the name "Ohara Disease" in German.
