Uesugi Kagetora

Japanese: 上杉景虎 - うえすぎかげとら
Uesugi Kagetora
[Born] Tenbun 22 (1553). Odawara
[Died] March 24, 1579. Military commander in the Sengoku period in Echigo. Son of Hojo Ujiyasu. Childhood name was Kunimasumaru. Original name was Ujihide. Adopted by Takeda Shingen, but returned to Japan due to discord between the Takeda and Hojo. Then, in 1569, when Hojo Ujiyasu and Echigo Uesugi Kenshin made peace, he was adopted by Kenshin and changed his name to Kagetora after Kenshin's childhood name. After Kenshin's death in 1578, he fought for the family headship with Kenshin's adopted son Kagekatsu, and Kagetora stayed at Uesugi Norimasa's Kitakawa residence and asked Hojo Ujiyasu for reinforcements. Ujiyasu asked Takeda Katsuyori to send troops, but Kagekatsu contacted Katsuyori, who stopped supporting Kagetora. Kagetora was isolated and defeated, and fled to Samegao Castle in Echigo, where he committed suicide.
