Cumbria - Cumbria (English spelling)

A county in the northwest of England, England. It was established in 1974 under the Local Government Act (1972). Its area is 6,824 square kilometers, and its population is 487,607 (2001). Its capital is Carlisle. It includes the former counties of Cumberland, West Moreland, Lancashire, and parts of Yorkshire, as well as the two cities of Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness. The Cumbrian Mountains, which occupy the central to southwestern part of the county, are home to numerous glacial lakes, and are known as the Lake District, attracting many tourists and vacationers.
