Hmong people - Mon

Japanese: モン族 - モンぞく(英語表記)Mon
Hmong people - Mon
Formerly called the Talain, this ethnic group lives in the delta region of central-western Thailand and eastern Myanmar (formerly Burma). They have an estimated population of about one million. They are of Mongoloid descent, having migrated from western China to Southeast Asia, and were influenced by Indian culture and Hindu Buddhism, eventually settling in Burma and Thailand. They are somewhat shorter-headed and have larger noses than the Palaung people, who are of similar descent. In the 7th century, they established the Dbaravati Kingdom in Lopburi, downstream of the Menam River, which separated from the Khmer Empire. In the 9th century, Pegu in Burma became their central city, and they introduced writing, Indian culture, rice cultivation, and other things. From the 11th to the 18th centuries, they fought against the Burmese in the north, and after a short period of independence from 1740 to 1757, they were destroyed by the Burmese, and some of them fled to Thailand and settled there.
