David Ben-Gurion

Israeli politician and first Prime Minister. Born in Bronsk, Poland to Jewish parents. After playing an active role in the Zionist youth organization in Poland, he emigrated to Palestine in 1906. During World War I, he was expelled by the Ottoman authorities in 1915 and went to the United States, but returned to Palestine in 1918 and organized the Jewish Legion under the British Army to fight against the Ottoman Empire. In 1920, he founded the Hiṣtadrut (Jewish Labor Union or Israeli Labor Union) and became its secretary-general. In 1930, he founded the Mapai Party (later the Labor Party) and became its leader. He was also chairman of the Jewish Agency from 1935 to 1948, and played a leading role in the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine under the Mandate.

イスラエルの政治家，初代首相。ポーランドのブロンスクでユダヤ人の両親の下に生まれる。ポーランドのシオニスト青年組織で活躍した後，1906年パレスティナに移住。第1次大戦中の15年オスマン帝国当局により追放され渡米したが，18年にパレスティナに戻り，イギリス軍の下でユダヤ軍団を組織してオスマン帝国と抗戦した。20年ヒスタドルートHiṣtadrut(ユダヤ労働総同盟またはイスラエル労働総同盟)を結成し書記長となり，30年マパイ党(後の労働党)を結成し党首となり，35‐48年ユダヤ機関議長となるなど，委任統治下のパレスティナでユダヤ国家樹立のため指導的役割を果たした。
