Born: March 25, 1904 in Altern
[Died] May 5, 1977. Bonn. German criminal law scholar and legal philosopher. Studied law and philosophy at the University of Jena and the University of Heidelberg, and taught at the universities of Cologne, Göttingen, and Bonn. Came to Japan in 1966. His theory of purposive actions, which focuses on the purposeful nature of human actions, had a major impact on the theoretical construction of modern criminal law. His book, Naturrecht und materiale Gerechtigkeit (Natural Law and Substantial Justice) (1951), is renowned as a representative work of legal philosophy based on the theory of substantial value. His main work is Das Deutsche Strafrecht in seinen Grundzügen (47), German Criminal Law.

ドイツの刑法学者，法哲学者。イェナ大学とハイデルベルク大学で法学と哲学を学び，ケルン，ゲッティンゲン，ボンの各大学で教職を歴任した。 1966年に来日。人間の行為の目的的性格に注目した目的的行為論によって現代の刑法学の理論構成に大きな影響を与えた。また，『自然法と実質的正義』 Naturrecht und materiale Gerechtigkeit (1951) は実質的価値論に基づいた法哲学の代表的文献として名高い。主著『ドイツ刑法』 Das Deutsche Strafrecht in seinen Grundzügen (47) 。
