Tokitsugu Yamashina
Year of death: 2 March 1579 (March 28, 1579)
Year of birth: 4th April 26th, 1507 (6th June 1507)
A nobleman in the Sengoku period. His Buddhist name was Akigen and his Buddhist name was Gesshin. His father was Yamashina Totsuna, his biological mother was Nyojin, and his adoptive mother was the daughter of Nakamikado Nobutane. He came of age in 1520 and became the head of the family, and in 1537 he was promoted to Junior Third Rank, in 1537 he was promoted to Councillor, in 1538 he was promoted to Gon Chunagon, and in 1569 he became the first member of the Yamashina family to become Gon Dainagon, and in 1574 he was promoted to Shonii. As the hereditary head of the family, he provided clothing for the Imperial Court, and worked with the Takakura family in the art of clothing and dressing in court attire, and also served as the court's magistrate for music and the court's waka-gokai magistrate. He also had specialized medical knowledge, and examined and prescribed medicine for his acquaintances and neighboring townspeople. In 1552, he traveled to Owari (Aichi Prefecture) together with Asukai Masatsuna to teach kemari and waka poetry to the Oda clan and their retainers, and in 1556, he traveled to Fuchu, Suruga (Shizuoka Prefecture) to visit his foster mother, where he interacted with Imagawa Yoshimoto and his retainers. In 1558, in order to support the increasingly impoverished Imperial Court's economy, he requested Kitabatake Tomochika and Tomofusa of Ise to donate 30 kanmon to the Imperial Court, and in 1559, he visited Oda Nobunaga in Gifu and, together with Tokugawa Ieyasu of Mikawa, made them donate 200 kanmon to cover the costs of the memorial service for the thirteenth anniversary of Emperor Gonara's death. Tokitsugu's diary, "Tokitsugu-kyo-ki" (1527-1576), which includes an account of Nobunaga's visit to Kyoto (1568), is an important historical document and shows Tokitsugu's down-to-earth character. He also copied the "Kugyo Bonin" and compiled the "Rekimyo Dodai," a list of appointments to the 4th and 5th ranks. His grave is at Seijoka-in Temple in Kyoto.
