A perennial plant of the Violaceae family. It is found in the temperate to subtropical zones of Asia and Europe, and grows in sandy areas on the coasts of Japan. It reproduces by spreading long underground stems. The stems are about 30-50 cm tall, stand upright, and branch out into many parts, with fine hairs growing along with the leaves. The leaves are 4-10 cm long, spatula-shaped, thick, and stalkless. In summer, the cymes at the ends of the branches produce many fragrant cream-colored flowers. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the underground stems grow long into the sand and reproduce.
