Fossil bed

...A dense layer that has a considerable degree of horizontal continuity is called a fossil layer in the narrow sense. In contrast, a fossil-rich part in a stratum that is intermittently arranged horizontally, sandwiched between non-fossil parts, is called a fossil bed. In the case of a fossil bed, it shares a common bedding plane with the surrounding fossil-free parts, and the origin of this is considered important, as it shows that the two were formed at the same time.
