...In a document to the town magistrate's office in 1842 (Tenpo 13), it was written that "the supplicants and chanters lived in Hashimoto-cho, Shiba Shinami-cho, Shitaya Yamazaki-cho, and in front of Tenryu-ji Temple in Yotsuya. They handed out riddles, or formed groups, sang songs, danced through the towns, or stood naked in front of the shops of town houses, begging for money." They were also a kind of beggar monks. Depending on their behavior, they were also called Sutasuta monks, Waiwai Tenno, Handa Gyonin, Konpira Gyonin, etc., and the entertainment they performed included many types such as the supplicant dance, Ahodarakyo, Chobokure, and Chongare, from which later Kappo-re and Naniwa-bushi were derived.
