Cornelia Knol

Japanese: コルネリア(英語表記)Cornelia Knol
Cornelia Knol
A woman from the Edo period. Daughter of C. Nijenrode, chief of the Dutch trading post in Hirado, and Slysia, a Japanese woman from Hirado. She lived in the 17th century. When her father died in 1633, she and her half-sister Hester were taken in by the trading post, and at the end of 1636 they were both sent to Batavia (Jakatla). In 1652, she married P. Knoll, a junior trading officer for the East India Company from Delft, and by 1670 they had four sons and six daughters. Her husband was gradually promoted to become the first senior trading officer and a captain in the accounting department, but he died of illness in February 1672. Cornelia lived a wealthy life with his inheritance, but in 1676 she remarried J. Bitter, a Batavia city attorney from Arnhem. She visited the Netherlands for a time, but later separated, and in 1687 she traveled to the Netherlands with her son Cornelius Knoll and his family. The statue of Cornelia erected in Hirado is a creation not based on the Knoll family portrait.
