...Those from the Edo period were made of metals such as iron, copper, or brass, or ceramic, had a large mouth like a clay teapot, from which a thick cloth wick was dispensed to light vegetable oil. In the Meiji period, before the spread of oil lamps, they were widely used nationwide as oil lighting devices, and in some regions they were called ankwa, kanchoro, kotoboshi, choro, tetoboshi, teranpu, tokuyo, or manjo.
