Minke whale

Minke whale

A baleen whale of the order Cetacea and family Baleen whale. It was also called the pied whale, but this name is rarely used in recent years because it is easily mistaken for a small sei whale. It has a spindle-shaped body and is the smallest species in the Baleen whale family, with a pointed beak. Its back is black and its ventral side is white, with a distinctive pattern in between. It has a white band on its pectoral fin, but this is not as clear in the closely related Antarctic minke whale B. bonaerensis , which lives in the Southern Hemisphere. Its baleen is yellowish-white, and the Antarctic minke whale has a black band on the outside. It reaches a birth length of 2.7 meters, and the average adult body length is 8 to 9 meters, depending on the lineage and sex, and it weighs about 6 tons. It is widely distributed from ice-covered seas to tropical seas, and this species can also be found in small attached seas. In the Antarctic, minke whales also invade pack ice. They feed mainly on krill, and also like to eat schooling fish. They have long been a target of whaling around the world, but commercial whaling has been prohibited since 1986 by the International Whaling Commission (IWC). Resources are abundant, with over 760,000 minke whales alone. There are 32,000 minke whales living in the North Pacific and 200,000 in the North Atlantic.
