Masqaṭ (English spelling)
The capital of Oman, located in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula. Population 52,000 (1993). Located in a natural basin facing the Gulf of Oman, it is blessed with a good harbor and has long been known as a transit port for East-West trade via the Arabian Peninsula. It was conquered by the Portuguese in 1507, but was recaptured in 1650 by Imam Sultan bin Saif, who was from the Ya'riba tribe. The Muscat Metropolitan Area is made up of the walled city of Muscat, Mutrah with its souk (market) and port, Loei with its government and residential areas, and Seeb with its royal palace and airport.

アラビア半島東部にあるオマーンの首都。人口5万2000(1993)。オマーン湾に面した自然の盆地に位置し,良港に恵まれ,古くからアラビア半島を経由する東西貿易の中継港として知られた。1507年ポルトガルに制圧されたが,ヤーリバ族出身のイマーム,スルタン・ブン・サイフが1650年に奪回した。城壁都市のマスカト,スーク(市場)と港をもつマトラ,官庁街と住宅街のルーイ,王宮と空港のあるシーブをあわせて,マスカト首都圏を構成する。
