Statistics created by the government and local public organizations. In Japan, the Statistics Act prescribes the creation of statistics under the principles of ensuring the veracity of statistics, eliminating duplication of statistical surveys, and establishing a statistical system. Among government statistics, statistics designated by the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications and publicly announced based on this law are called designated statistics. The law allows for the imposition of a reporting obligation on those who report designated statistics, and penalties are set out for those who avoid reporting or make false reports. At the same time, there are provisions for protecting confidentiality so that reporters are not put at a disadvantage. In addition, there are also approved statistics, which are implemented with the approval of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, and notified statistics, which require reporting to the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, as statistics equivalent to designated statistics.

政府，地方公共団体が作成する統計のこと。日本では統計法により，統計の真実性を確保し，統計調査の重複を除き，統計の体系を整備するといった理念の下，統計の作成が規定されている。官庁統計の中で，この法律に基づき総務大臣が指定しその旨を公示した統計を指定統計という。指定統計の申告者には申告義務を課すことができ，申告忌避や虚偽の申告に対しては罰則が定められている。同時に，申告者の不利益にならないよう秘密保護の規定も設けられている。また，指定統計に準ずるものとして，総務大臣の承認を得て実施される承認統計，総務大臣に届け出が義務づけられている届出統計がある。
