A typical example of American expansionism, translated as "manifest destiny" or "destiny of expansion." It is a term used by New York City journalist John L. O'Sullivan (1813-95) in an essay titled "Annexation," published in the July 1845 issue of the Democratic Review. O'Sullivan wrote, "The greatness of our manifest destiny, that we should expand upon this continent given to us by God, for the advancement of the liberty of the millions of our subjects, who year by year increase in number..."
