Shopping Guide for One Person - Shopping Guide for One Person

Japanese: 買物独案内 - かいものひとりあんない
Shopping Guide for One Person - Shopping Guide for One Person
A directory of merchants and craftsmen published by a printing press from the Edo period to the early Meiji period. It allows people to find the store they are looking for while they are shopping or ordering something made to order. It includes addresses and shop curtain seals, and is arranged in alphabetical order by type of business. Unlike simple directories of fellow merchants, it includes advertisements for pharmaceuticals and restaurants, and was created with the understanding that it had informational value in advertising shop names. Representative examples include "Shonin Kaimono Sotokanai" (Osaka), published in 1820 (Bunsei 3), and "Edo Kaimono Sotokanai" (Edo Kaimono Sotokanai), published in 1824. Most are written in horizontal format. [Tanaka Yasuo]
