A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family (APG classification: Cyperaceae). It grows on the forest floor in mountainous areas. It grows 20-40 cm tall, with hard leaves about 1 cm wide. It is called Kansuge because its leaves remain green even in the cold. Variegated species are planted in gardens and used as cut plants. It is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu west of Fukushima Prefecture. There are several other species in Japan that bear the name Kansuge. The small-sized C. conica Boott, similar to Kansuge, commonly grows on the forest floor throughout Japan. Its leaves are 2-4 mm wide, dark green, and rough. The Okuno Kansuge C. foliosissima Fr.Schm. resembles Kansuge, but can be distinguished by the W-shaped wavy leaf cross section. The common sedge, C. reinii Franch. et Sav., grows in forests, with the uppermost spikelet containing male flowers and the remaining spikelets containing male flowers at the top and female flowers at the bottom.
