Vernyi

Japanese: Vernyi
Vernyi

In 1854, the Russian army annexed the Kazakh nomadic settlement of Almaty (meaning "land of apples") and established the strategic and colonial outpost "Belnoye" (Place of Loyalty). In 1867, it was renamed Vernyi and became the capital of Semirechensk Oblast. The city was hit by two major earthquakes, in 1887 and 1911 (magnitude 10), and was destroyed each time, but the wooden cathedral built by engineer AP Zenkov survived the 1911 earthquake and remains today (now the Central Museum of the Republic).
