spectral sensitization

...In 1873, the German Hermann Wilhelm Vogel (1834-98) discovered that adding certain dyes to photographic emulsions makes them sensitive to longer wavelengths of light. This widening of the range of color light to which an emulsion is sensitive is called spectral sensitization. The discovery of spectral sensitization led to the production of orthophotographic plates and orthofilms that are sensitive to blue to yellow color light, as well as panchromatic materials that are sensitive to the entire visible range. The most important dyes used in spectral sensitization of photographic emulsions are cyanine dyes.
