This is the 15th story in Grimm's Fairy Tales. A poor woodcutter and his wife abandon Hansel and Gretel in the forest. The brother and sister reach a gingerbread house in the forest. The witch who lives there plans to fatten up the brother before eating him. When the sister is ordered to see if the bread oven is hot enough, she tricks the witch into the oven, killing her, and returns home safely with her brother. It was told by the Wirth family, who run a pharmacy in Kassel. In the fifth edition (1843), the style was heavily influenced by the Alsace fairy tales published the previous year, and the story took on its present-day form.

Opera

Based on the original work by the Brothers Grimm, German composer Humperdinck completed the work in 1893 and premiered in Weimar the same year to great success. The libretto was written by the composer's younger sister, Adelheid Wette, and it eliminated the dark atmosphere of the original work, emphasizing the religious aspects of the fairy tale. Musically, it is strongly influenced by Wagner, and the so-called leading motives, which represent specific characters or events, are used skillfully to unify the work as a whole, but the melodies are familiar in the style of folk songs, and the entire piece is enveloped in a simple warmth. It is popular as an opera that anyone can enjoy, and is performed around the world during the Christmas season. The entire work was first performed in Japan in 1949 (Showa 24).

『グリム童話集』15番の話。貧しい木こり夫婦がヘンゼルとグレーテルを森の中に捨てる。兄妹は森の中でお菓子の家に到達。そこに住む魔女は、兄を太(ふと)らせてから食べようとする。妹はパン焼き竈(がま)が十分熱せられたか見てくるよう命じられたとき、魔女をだまして竈に押し込んで殺し、兄と2人で無事帰宅する。カッセルの薬局経営者ウィルト家の人が語ったもの。第五版（1843）において、前年に公刊されたアルザス地方のメルヒェンから文体上大きな影響を受けて、今日の形になった。

オペラ

グリム兄弟の原作を基にドイツの作曲家フンパーディンクが1893年に完成し、同年ワイマールで初演され、大成功を収めた。作曲者の実妹アデルハイト・ウェッテによる台本で、原作の暗い雰囲気は一掃され、この童話の宗教的側面が強調されている。音楽的にはワーグナーの影響が強く、特定の人物や事象を表す、いわゆる示導動機が巧みに利用されて全体の統一が図られているが、旋律は民謡風に親しみやすく、全曲は素朴な暖かさに包まれている。だれにでも楽しめる歌劇として人気が高く、クリスマス・シーズンに世界各国で上演されている。日本での全曲初演は1949年（昭和24）。
